Animated short film

Project duration: Sept 2025 - Jun 2026

For this project I was the co-Producer working on creating an experience that helps immerse and reach the audience on a more personal level to allow reflection.

I also took tasks like festival distribution, crowd funding campaigning, making a Press kit and more!

This short film is directed by Venetia Theodosiou(me).

Logline:

When her grandfather falls ill and the well dries up, young Sofia must climb the mountains for water, facing her fears and finding her own way to restore life to her family.

Logline (Dutch):

Wanneer haar opa ziek wordt en de waterput opdroogt, moet de jonge Sofia de bergen in trekken om water te halen. Onderweg trotseert ze haar angsten en vindt ze haar eigen manier om het leven terug te brengen naar haar familie.

Synopsis:

In Cyprus in a small house surrounded by mountains, six-year-old Sofia spends her days mimicking her grandparents, weaving baskets and listening to her grandfather play the recorder. She hides in their traditions, afraid to stray from their ways and discover her own. But when her beloved grandfather falls ill and the well runs dry, Sofia is urged to climb the mountain alone in search for water. Though hesitant, her love for her grandfather pushes her to take the first steps on a journey that will test her in ways she has never imagined.

As she struggles against the harsh climb, her fear, and the mountain that goes against her, Sofia begins to morph it into something familiar to her, reeds. Guided by her family’s love and the whispers of nature, she learns that she cannot simply copy what has come before she must find her own voice. In embracing her uniqueness, Sofia awakens a hidden power within herself, restoring the flow of water and bringing renewal to her family. Her journey becomes not only one of survival but of self-discovery, as she learns the strength to be her own person.

My work as a Producer

Organisation:

I took on the team planning and scheduling I set up a Miro board planner since all members had access to it and actively used it. I also created the production pipeline to keep track of all major tasks and be sure we weren't falling behind.

Before production started I also set up an online breakdown sheet, with my co-producer Anouk, for easy access from the whole team. I set up a Google Drive to archive and save our pre-production, production and post-production.

Communication:

For communication I set up WhatsApp Community group since we were recruiting the team slowly and this was the up everyone had most avaliable. For that reason i set up links pages in both to connect them easily to both and I also provided all the information they needed in both programs.

After also learning how my team receives feedback the best, I set up the layouts for the background artists and the animators so the traditional style of the backgrounds would stay consistent using that base and the animation wouldn't be inconsistent between shots. I prepared video scene references of the character expressions and actions for each shot. That way animators knew what my vision was for each scene, other than the more minimal storyboards.

Crowd funding and Instagram page:

For the crowdfunding campaign I knew I wanted it to feel personal so I started with building a process focused Instagram page to share with Cypriots from home my work but also with whomever found the film appealing. With that page set up I was able to then start the campaign and build on that initial interest. I focused to sharing personal video messages with potential donors that were already following our journey and that set us up to reach our goal faster. From the choice of platform to the way of reaching out each stepped lead us to successfully reach our goal.

Audience experience:

For this project I wanted to find a way to showcase a short film beyond a festival run. I wanted to reach it's audience in a personal and immersive level. For this reason I set it up as an experience where you get to watch the film in the most immersive room possible, with elements that awaken all your sense and make you feel like you are in the environment of the film. Sitting in a comfortable seat you get to enjoy the film and then you are guided through those familiar backgrounds from the film but now in the 1st pov to really immerse and awaken your mind. In the end, you are given a warm tea, from the Cyprus mountains, and you are asked to take your time and read and complete a self-reflective questionnaire.

Research:

I firstly made sure to immerse myself in the elements by visiting Cyprus environments, to be able to advertise it in a tidy way in our Instagram page, choosing the most important cultural objects to share details of. But, to also be able to then choose which elements to use for the immersion of the experience for the audience. I also did testing in a smaller scale during my minor to see if the elements that worked for me also worked for other people. I tested the size of the group watching and the amount that could later reflect on the film and why. I observed how it was important for neurodivergent people like me to push this experience by involving a visual guided meditation and a self-reflective questionnaire that could keep them from being overwhelmed like in other experiences. I even got experts in meditation and phycology to take a look at my visual guided 1st pov experience and the self-reflective questionnaire to ensure they were not too direct for the audience.
